A Small Town With a Big Caribbean Heart

Explore A Familiar Riviera Maya Setting With its own Unique rhythm.

Just 20 minutes from Cancún airport, Puerto Morelos feels like another world, yet still has all the first world amenities you'll find in neighboring tourist hotspots.

Most people come for the world-class reef hundreds of meters offshore. Many settle in, maybe even forever. Once a sleepy fishing village, it’s now a laid-back community of locals, divers, expatriates, travelers, hippies, and local adventurers who stay for the vibe.

Mornings start with the sound of waves against the pier, not traffic. You can walk from your hotel to the beach, eat ceviche barefoot, and be underwater with the colorful and abundant sea life minutes later.

Many visitors expect a quiet detour but find their favorite place on the coast.

Lodging Opportunities: From Boutique to Beachfront

The town is split into two main areas that seem like different places entirely. "Puerto" is the beach district, where Wet Set is located. "Colonia" is a few minutes inland by car or moto, on the other side of the highway.

If you want to wake up and walk straight onto the sand, you’ll want to stay in Puerto. Most of the boutique hotels, beachfront rentals, and guesthouses cluster around the main square and along the shoreline. There’s even a hostel near the Oxxo if you’re traveling light.

Colonia, the more local side of town, offers budget-friendly options — small hotels, apartments, and local eateries — and gives you a glimpse of everyday life in Puerto Morelos. It’s a five-minute taxi or bike ride to the beach, so it’s still convenient if you don’t mind a little back-and-forth.

Local tip: Book early from December through April. Rooms on the Portside fill up fast once divers and snowbirds start arriving.

Dining: Seafood, Street Tacos & Sunset Views

Despite the town’s size, the variety makes it feel like a much larger destination. What you won’t find are the bland resort buffets or all-inclusive lines. Every meal here feels personal.

Enjoy fine-dining spots serving fresh seafood and craft cocktails, cozy Italian and Thai restaurants, sushi bars, burger joints, steakhouses, and cheap but delicious taco stands.

Grab fish tacos by the pier, shrimp ceviche served by the kilo, or grilled catch of the day with your toes in the sand. Venture into the Colonia for real Yucatán flavors: cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork), sopa de lima, or tamales steamed in banana leaves.

Owner’s pick: Ask us where the locals go for ceviche or late-night al pastor tacos. We’ll happily point you in the right direction.

Go Out: Laid Back Town With Surprisingly Lively Nights

Don’t let the quiet daytime vibe fool you — locals and expats keep things lively with live music almost every night, from mellow acoustic sets to rock bands to reggae on the beach.

Grab an afternoon beer at Don Ernesto’s, a where travelers and longtime residents swap stories by the sea. On Sundays the beach comes alive with bands and good vibes — The Diving Lodge is a great place for reggae tunes in the sand. Blue Morelos serves 2-for-1 margaritas all day, every day.

Want to mix with locals? Head to Micheladas del Semáforo in the Colonia, a sports bar with live music and plenty of personality. If you ever crave a big night out, the clubs and cocktail bars of Cancún or Playa del Carmen are just a cab ride away.

Bars come and go here (it's part of the charm), but there’s always somewhere worth stopping in, whether you’re chasing sunset cocktails, a cold beer with locals, or a night of music under the palms.

How To Get To Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos sits perfectly between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. We're 20 minutes south of Cancún International Airport and 25 minutes north of Playa del Carmen.

We might be a best-kept secret but getting here is refreshingly simple: taxis, private shuttles, and colectivos (shared public vans) all run daily, and if you’re renting a car, the highway exit is clearly marked).

In fact, many travelers find it easier to get in and out of Puerto Morelos than Cancún itself — no city traffic to fight through and no long detours down hotel-zone roads. If you’re staying at a resort or hotel, they’ll arrange transportation for you, either included in your booking or for a small additional fee.

A straight shot from the airport to the beach... that’s Puerto Morelos.

In-Town Transport: Once You’re Here, No Car Needed

Getting around Puerto Morelos is effortless. The town is small, flat, and walkable. You can go from your hotel to the beach, shops, and restaurants in just a few minutes.

If you need to go farther, taxis are easy to find around the square and beach road. Unlike in many tourist towns, drivers here are straightforward and trustworthy, so there’s rarely a need to haggle. Ask hotel staff for the standard rate just to be sure.

Colectivos (shared vans) are another simple and cheap option. It's 10 pesos to hop in and reach almost any area within town or between the Portside and Colonia. They also run up and down the highway all day if you want to pay a bit more to visit towns farther along the coast.

Bicycles and scooters are available for rent and are perfect for exploring side streets and beach roads. You’ll quickly see why most visitors skip the rental car altogether — everything you need is right here

How To Find Wet Set

Our dive and scuba shop is located on one of the busier parts of the beach in town, about 50 feet from the water.

We're right next door to the iconic Don Ernesto's, where residents and tourists meet to mingle and have drinks every afternoon.

If you’re arriving from the highway, take the road straight into town until you reach the ocean, then turn left.

If the map doesn't get you here, just stop anyone who looks like they belong and have them send you to Don Ernesto's.

You can walk here from most hotels in five to ten minutes.

Things To Do: Slow Days. Big Smiles. Never A Dull Moment.

Puerto Morelos might be best known for its reef, but there’s plenty to enjoy above the water too

The beach is long, wide, and surprisingly quiet, especially compared to Cancún or Playa del Carmen. You’ll always find a peaceful stretch of sand and plenty of palms for shade. One of the best things you can do here is simply relax with the family under the palms or spend a half day at one of the town’s beach clubs, where you can swim, order lunch, and enjoy the calm Caribbean without crowds or noise.

Kids can snorkel the shallow reef, meet crocodiles and monkeys at Crococun Zoo, or swim in nearby cenotes (freshwater sinkholes). On weekends, especially Sundays, locals and visitors gather along the shore and in the square for live music, food stands, and sunset by the lighthouse — a simple, perfect Puerto Morelos tradition.

If you’re up for exploring, take the scenic drive down the Ruta de los Cenotes, a string of jungle swimming holes just minutes inland. Are you a foodie? Sign up for a cuisine-focused walking tour in Colonia.

Pro tip: Bring cash for cenotes and roadside fruit stands. They rarely take cards.

INTERESTED IN MOVING HERE?

You're Not The First To Fall In Love...

It happens all the time... people come to Puerto Morelos for a week and start wondering what it would take to stay. Life moves slower, but it’s far from sleepy.

There’s a friendly, growing mix of locals and expats from all over the world who’ve traded traffic and stress for ocean breezes and simpler days.

It’s easy to make friends, and even easier to find your rhythm . Morning swims, coffee in the square, live music in the evenings. Many who settle here still travel or work remotely, but they come home to something rare: a town that still feels like a community.

If you’re curious, stop by a local hangout like Don Ernesto’s or Micheladas del Semáforo and chat with a few of the regulars. You’ll see why so many people say they came for the reef and stayed for the lifestyle.

Simple Tips to Make Life Easier

Puerto Morelos is one of the safest and most relaxed towns on the Riviera Maya, but a few local tips can make your stay even smoother.

Money

ATMs and banks are around the town square. The ones inside stores or pharmacies are usually the most reliable. Bring pesos for taxis, tips, and small shops; many local places don’t take cards or USD

Water:

Tap water isn’t drinkable, but bottled and purified water are available everywhere.

Sun & Reef Care

Please use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching coral — the reef here is alive and protected. We want to keep it that way.

Beach Etiquette:

Don’t leave valuables unattended. Though theft is rare, it can happen. A dry bag is handy if you’re snorkeling.

Connectivity:

Wi-Fi is widely available, and most cafés are happy to share their password if you’re buying a drink.

Local Courtesy:

A smile and a simple “buenos días” go a long way — Puerto is friendly, but still very local.
